BRANTFORD, ON- The Brantford 99ers played host to the East Conference Wellington Dukes on Thursday night at the Gretzky Centre. Aiden Berry got the start in goal for Brantford, and Shane Shelest got the start for the Dukes.
After almost a full 20 minutes of some even end-to-end play, newly acquired Spencer Vandenberg opened the scoring for the 99ers, wiring the puck through the five hole of Shelest for his 1st goal of the season and 1st as a 99er, sending Brantford to the locker room up 1-0 after 20.
Wellington got the jump on Brantford to start the middle frame, with Tzaferis and Mitchell both scoring just 3 minutes into the period to give the Dukes a 2-1 advantage. The middle period also featured several penalty minutes from both sides which carried over into the 3rd period, however the score remained 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Halfway through the final frame, a holding call that sent Tyler Renneboog to the penalty box for 2 minutes came back to bite Brantford, as Ben Vreugdenhil fired a shot from the point which soared past a screened Aiden Berry, giving the Dukes a 2 goal lead with 10 minutes to play. Wellington added one more power play tally before the final buzzer, defeating the 99ers by a score of 4-1.
